Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos

Time itself breathes life into it. That's how the Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre describes the way this remarkable table clock functions. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos is powered by a mechanism that responds to minute temperature fluctuations. But it's not only its innovative technology, it's also the breathtaking beauty of the design that makes the Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos clock a sought after collector's item - so much so that it has been presented as an official gift on Swiss state visits for many years.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos – a groundbreaking masterpiece

Time itself breathes life into it. That's how the Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre describes the way this remarkable table clock functions. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos is powered by a mechanism that responds to minute temperature fluctuations. But it's not only its innovative technology, it's also the breathtaking beauty of the design that makes the Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos clock a sought after collector's item - so much so that it has been presented as an official gift on Swiss state visits for many years.

A pendulum clock that winds itself up automatically? This seeming magic trick was invented and developed by Jaeger-LeCoultre as far back as 1928. With the Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos clock, the company created a masterpiece without peer: for a fitting parallel, you have to turn to Leonardo da Vinci's dream of a perpetuum mobile.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos clock's ability to supply itself with the drive energy it needs is, needless to say, not the result of magic but of finely crafted Swiss technology. Inside the movement is an hermetically sealed capsule which contains a mixture of ethyl chloride gas (C2H5Cl). When there's a temperature fluctuation, the mixture expands or contracts.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos clock

Engineering that has inspired generation after generation

The optimal operating temperature of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos is between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius. If the temperature increases or decreases by just 1 Kelvin, the gas expands or contracts correspondingly. The energy gained is stored away efficiently in a mechanical spring, thus creating a power reserve of up to 48 hours. As the mechanism is so sensitive, it's important to keep the Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos in a room with a stable temperature.

Since the gas mixture only generates a relatively low amount of drive energy, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos is designed to operate with only a limited number of parts. The movement has to be kept under glass in order to protect the sensitive movement from dust. This is because even tiny particles can cause friction which could affect its accuracy. In this way the the Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos clock maintains a precision of 30 seconds to 1 minute per month.

Due to their low drive energy, Atmos table clocks can only achieve a slow rotation. For this reason, they don't have a second hand or chimes. However, a moon phase display is an option, as in the Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos Classique Phases de lune.

Experience the timelessness of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos

Jaeger-LeCoultre estimates that its Atmos table clocks should have a lifespan of several hundred years, making them timeless in the true sense of the word. And thanks to their glass housings, their unique technology is open to view, so that generations of people can marvel at it.

While the models in the Classique series retain the classic Atmos look, other Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos serial numbers offer exciting stylistic variations. For example, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos 568 by Marc Newson is a reinvention by the well known Australian designer that creates the illusion of complete transparency. Then there are vintage models like the Atmos Modern Luigi Colani from the 1970s. This uses stainless steel to turn the clock into what looks like an instrument on board a space shuttle.

With its independent energy supply, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos fits perfectly with today's concepts of sustainability. Consider this impressive statistic: were 60 million Atmos clocks to “breathe”, they wouldn't consume more energy than a single 15-watt electric light bulb.
